Escape rooms like the School of Hard Locks are one of the fastest growing forms of entertainment in the world today. Escape rooms are physical adventure games where the participants are put in a locked room, and they must use their wits to solve a series of puzzles and mysteries, find hints and escape the room within the given time - which is normally one hour.

Whether you are an escape room rookie or pro, participating in real escape games is a lot of fun (and is much cooler than watching a movie the whole day).  If you are planning to start visiting escape room games, check out this article for tips on how to have the most success inside the real escape game and how to make your escape room experience as fun as possible:

Attitude matters a lot
Do you know what leads to success in an escape room? Is it your intelligence? Sure that helps - if you can understand and solve the puzzles quickly you may have success. But remember, when you enter an escape room you have no prior knowledge of what you will be required to do, and if you tend to overthink like when you are playing grandmaster chess, then you are going to waste your time.

What leads to success in escape games is your attitude. Stay positive as you work your way through the room.  There  are going to be setbacks and frustrations.  Those are to be expected.  Remember it is a GAME. Make the game fun and enthusiastic, and you will find that you will finish faster.

 

Beware the temptation to drink alcohol before you visit the escape room. Escape games need someone who is sober to think critically and solve the puzzle.  Save the libations for celebrating your success after you escape the room.

Search and sort
The most important thing while in the locked room is to look for clues. Explore the escape room completely without leaving any part untouched. Look under things, behind things, on top of things and even inside things. A good escape team unearths everything before they start working together to figure out how to use what they have found. How many locks are in the room?  What do they need to open them - a key or a combination?  Letters or numbers?  Knowing these facts will help you organize the rest of your time in the locked room.

 

If things are labeled as "do not touch," don't.  This is either for your protection or something that could disrupt the intended flow of the game.  Follow the rules for your own benefit.

Communicate
The best way to solve puzzles so fast is by building a team. You cannot do it all alone. Most rooms are designed to have lots of clues and different types of puzzles.  The process of solving the room involves a lot of sharing of information. It also needs deep thinking. Two brains (or four) are better than one, and therefore, you need to work together as a team and communicate what you learn and how you think your findings fit into the scheme of the room.

 

When in the room, don’t make unnecessary noise. You need to listen to one person at a time. And don’t necessarily follow the loudest person just because they make the most noise - they are not always right.  When you unearth something, shout it out loud, talk it out to your fellow teammates and encourage them to do the same.  You will find out that by sharing your information and ideas together you have what it takes to unlock the door.

Divide duties and conquer
When you have multiple puzzles in a room, it is very wise to share the problems instead of all of you doing one puzzle at a time. Dedicate one puzzle to one group, the next mystery to another group and the remaining to another group. You can also have someone just standing behind you all taking notes.  Focusing on making this a team building activity is a great tactic that will help you solve the hardest puzzle within the shortest time and proceed to the next puzzle.

Number conversion
In a room with numbers around it, you will be given hints to arrange them. These numbers are related to other objects in that locked room. This is when it helps to know what you need for each different lock in the room.  But if there are no clues that directly apply to that input, then you should look to identify if they have any connection so that you can convert them into different data. So, if you are lucky to know how to convert clues into data, then you are on the right track.

Know when to ask for a hint
Pressing the hint button takes away all the pride that you had before starting the game. What hurts, even more, is failing to unlock the door within the required time. When in this real escape game, you should know when it is the right time to ask for hints. Don’t rush for tips, but don't fail to ask for them in a timely manner.  The objective is to get out of the locked room.  You should be methodical in your operations if you want to succeed.
